Homemade Grip Trainer Pull-Up Variation

by Tom Harvey on 2010/02/20

Here is a piece of homemade training equipment targeted at improved grip. This is a great way to add some additional intensity to your pull-ups. In this video is Steve, one of our local MMA fighters and Jeet Kune Do students, is using these in one of his training session. As a Combat Athlete having a strong grip is essential.

Supplies:

  • 2″ Schedule 40 PVC cut to 6″ each
  • Chain
  • 2 steal safety chain clips
  • Bolt Cutter

Basically I used some extra 2″ Schedule 40 PVC I had laying around. The chain was a smaller link but heavy duty. I cut the chain to the desired length using a bolt cutter. There are a few variations I can think of depending on your setup. You may want to use a chain with a plastic coating if your concerned about wear and tear on your pull-up bar. You could also opt’ed for tie down straps instead of chains. You could go with a larger or smaller PVC pipe depending on your or your athlete’s hand size. Obviously the larger it is the hard it will be.
