Combat Athletics – Deadlifting

Deadlifts may very be the oldest known strength training exercise. Deadlifts were originally performed using rocks, logs, and various other objects we consider to be strongman training today. Today the deadlift is one of the primary competitive exercises in powerlifting and strongman training. However despite it’s popularity within these areas and it’s long history of building functional strength few recognize it’s role in combat athletics.

Building A Strong Neck

I have always incorporated neck training as part of my exercise prescription. However it wasn’t until attending wrestling classes for my son that I grew an appreciation and interest in how wrestlers approached it. They have some of the strongest necks in combat athletics and for good reason. Above is a neck strengthening progression we are currently working on in our training.
